      STOP THE FTAA! TEACH-IN
      Tuesday, March 6th 5-7 pm
      UCSD Cross Cultural Center
      Lecture Hall

      Panel of Speakers to Include:

      * Paula Chakravartty, Associate Professor, Communications dept., on the
      Free Trade Area of the Americas Agreement

      * Jaime Cota, maquiladora organizer from Tijuana (Centro Informacion
      Trabajador)

      * Alejandro Kurczyn, member of the FZLN in Ensenada, Mexico (Frente
      Zapatista Liberacion Nacional), to speak on the Zapatista movement and the
      fight for Indigenous rights in Mexico

      * Slideshow and presentation about
      results of neoliberalism/NAFTA in Mexico border region

      * Other speakers to address
      labor issues, cross-border solidarity and the environment.

      The FTAA (Free Trade Area of the Americas) will extend NAFTA (North American
      Free Trade Agreement) to the
      entire Western Hemisphere. Like NAFTA, the FTAA is an expansion of
      neoliberal policy, with privatization, deregulation of industry and required
      cuts and social spending, subsidies and welfare programs. In other words, it
      is an expansion of the corporate agenda throughout the Americas creating the
      biggest free trade zone in the world, all at the expense of workers,
      indigenous peoples, small farmers, immigrants and the environment. What
      makes this plan even more threatening, is that it is being drawn up by the
      corporations themselves, in collaboration with the heads of state, in an
      secretive manner. There has been no involvement of human rights groups,
      unions, indigenous groups or others representing the millions of people that
      will be affected by its implementation. That is why there is a continent
      wide opposition mobilizing against the FTAA. From trade unions to immigrants
      rights groups, many are organizing to oppose the FTAA and say no to
      neoliberalism and corporate greed! Join us for an informative teach-in about
      the FTAA and its impact as well as the struggle for workers rights,
      indigenous and immigrant rights, the fight to defend the environment and
      the new international solidarity movements emerging from these struggles.

      Learn about the FTAA and why it has to be stopped.
