AgJOBS: Cloture Motion Defeated: Congratulations
Farmworker Justice Fund, Inc., www.fwjustice.org
July 8 8pmEDT
Congratulations. With help from the coalition supporting AgJOBS, the Senate
defeated the motion for cloture filed by Sen. Frist on the debate on the
class action bill. Sen. Frist now has much less ability to stop AgJOBS from
being raised as an amendment, however it appears that Frist intends to
withdraw the class action bill entirely. Another legislative vehicle would
need to be found. Still, the support for AgJOBS, including 63 Senate
cosponsors, is a force to be reckoned with. Thanks to all those who worked
on this. Now on to finding a way to pass AgJOBS.

CALLS NEEDED TO SENATE OFFICES TO SUPPORT AGJOBS -- Take Action!
Later today (July 8), there will be a vote on Majority Leader Frist's motion
to invoke "cloture" -- a vote to cut off debate on the class action bill. A
vote for cloture will kill the chance to add AgJOBS as an amendment to this
class action bill. The class action bill has support of a majority of
Senators and is one of the few bills likely to pass this year. Therefore, it
is a "vehicle" for attaching other legislation -- including AgJOBS -- that
the Senate leadership does not want to schedule for a separate vote.
Senator Larry Craig (R-ID) has been tenaciously insisting that AgJOBS be
offered as an amendment on the class action bill. 63 Senators are already
signed on as co-sponsors to AgJOBS, but the Senate leader, Bill Frist
(R-TN), has so far refused to allow the amendment.
WE NEED CALLS TO SENATE OFFICES TO ASK SENATORS TO VOTE AGAINST CLOTURE ON

Smith (R-OR), and other cosponsors of AgJOBS--Brownback (R-KS), Coleman
(R-MN), DeWine (R-OH), Hagel (R-NE), Roberts (R-KS), and Specter (R-PA).
