      January 23, 2003

President Bush talked about his new immigration proposal during his Jan. 20
State of the Union address.  His plan is empty. It offers no new path for
hard-working immigrants to earn a green card and the right to permanently be in
      this country legally.

There is a better way—a bipartisan approach. An historic bipartisan
agreement, negotiated by the United Farm Workers and the nation’s major grower groups,
was reached last year on legislation to let undocumented farm workers earn the
right to stay in this country legally.

Help us protect those who put the rich bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables
on America’s dinner tables. These hard working people accept risks no other
American workers endure. They pay taxes but enjoy few, if any, benefits while
performing some of the most important labor in our nation: feeding America and
      much of the world.

Tell President Bush to move beyond his rhetoric to concrete steps that deal
equitably with the dilemmas facing immigrants, their families and employers—
real solutions like the AgJobs bill, S. 1645. This detailed bipartisan
legislation is before Congress now and it is strongly backed by the leaders of both
parties in each house of Congress as well as the labor, employer and
immigrant-rights communities. We hope the President won't stay on the sidelines any longer.

Please e-mail your senator and representative with an appeal for them to
support the “Agricultural Job Opportunity, Benefits and Security Act of 2003,” a
compromise bill by Senators Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Larry Craig (R-Id.),
and Representatives Howard Berman (D-Calif.) and Chris Cannon (R-Ut.) instead
      of President Bush’s empty promises.
