      Police shoot Hawthorne gunman
      By Larry Altman
      Staff Writer

Police shot a man to death in Hawthorne Tuesday night as he tried to
      kill his girlfriend, police said.

The woman called 911 about 6p.m. saying her boyfriend was threatening
her, Hawthorne police Lt. Jim Royer said.

Dispatchers remained on the phone with the woman as police responded
to an apartment at 132nd Street and Doty Avenue. Officers could hear
      the threats over the phone.

When officers arrived, they heard gunfire coming from the building,
      Royer said.

"He was shooting at his girlfriend as he was leaving the apartment and
was confronted by officers," Royer said. "He had a gun in his hand and
      they shot him."

The gunman missed the woman, who was unhurt. No officers were injured.

The gunman was dead at the scene. His name was not immediately available.

Sheriff's Department homicide detectives are investigating the
      officer-involved shooting.
