Family Friendly Cleanup Day - roundup
- We had perhaps 70 to 100 people show up at FDR School to participate in a
neighborhood cleanup last Saturday. The targeted area was east of Yukon and
west of Crenshaw. Mayor Guidi and Councilman Velez were there, Bodger Park
residents, Hawthorne Cable TV, Lawndale Elementary School Superintendent Joe
Condon, and Mrs. Dayla Sims, principal of FDR/Carson schools, a group of
parents and children from Carson/FDR, the Girl Scouts, a Hawthorne high
school service club, and others.
Mayor Guidi had arranged to have help from the City of Hawthorne - members
of Parks and Rec / graffiti patrol were on hand with trucks and tools. H&C
donated two 40 ton dumpsters. Starbucks donated coffee.
We worked from 9:30 until 12:30 and ended up filling both 40 ton dumpsters
and removing miles of graffiti. Mayor Guidi and Councilman Velez were some
of the last to leave.
Although the cleanup crossed Hawthorne's border with Gardena and LA County,
I feel that it was well worth the effort to reduce blight in Hawthorne. A
clean community, regardless of borders, reflects back on us all. Although
we are lucky to have a responsive city when it comes to graffiti and trash,
it's clear that other communities are not so privileged.
Deep felt thanks are due to all who participated in the cleanup.
