Re: [BirdYak] Gull & grebe at Buchanan Lake
Yep, it does look like an adult California Gull. We are missing its leg color so a tiny element of doubt might remain but me thinks California Gull is a good call.

Subject: [BirdYak] Gull & grebe at Buchanan Lake
Oops. Sunday evening Mary & I saw a gull at Buchanan Lake. In the low light I presumed it was the Ring-bill Gull recently reported by Luke. Yesterday morning I visited again & took photos of it & the continuing Western Grebe that Richard Repp found. Reviewing my photos this morning, the grebe I saw is indeed a Western Grebe, but the gull sure looks like a California Gull. I've not visited this morning to see if it continues. A highly cropped digiscoped image is on my website in both the "Yakima birds" & "Identification help wanted" image galleries.
We spent much more time scoping many Hooded Mergansers. With the varying amount of white presented on their heads, we could easily have misidentified them as Buffleheads or Ruddy Ducks, especially since we could have been influenced by a recent report of Ruddy Ducks there. I'd been just warned about Hooded Mergansers being misidentified as Ruddy Ducks.
