Today while driving to work, I saw a gull-like bird flying over one of the
I-82 freeway ponds between Union Gap and the Wapato Exit. It had no
noticeable black on the wing tips which rules out Ring-billed, Herring and
California Gull. It was very whitish which also eliminates Western Gull.
The size was quite large which makes me think it might have been a Caspian
Tern, but I didn't notice any reddish-orange beak or black on the head.
That leaves it down to Glaucous, Glaucous-winged or Thayer's as a
possibility. It was heading north towards Yakima but could have flown and
landed on either of the two freeway ponds between Union Gap and Wapato. Of
course, at 70 mph it was hard to get a good look as we were heading in two
different directions. Just thought I would give a heads up to anyone who
might want to investigate this today as I am stuck at work.
