PRIEST RAPIDS LAKE
Andy and Ellen Stepniewski, Bill Drenguis and I enjoyed great weather and
calm waters at Priest Rapids today. We tallied around 60 species, and the
highlights included a MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE working the water birch trees along
Cold Creek, not the habitat you would expect.
There were more RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS than I have ever seen in Yakima
County at one time; they easily outnumbered the Common Mergansers.
We had both Common and Pacific Loon, but the bird of the day was a
RED-THROATED LOON lazily drifting down the river. This was a county bird for
three of us and a year bird for all four.
Keep those binos handy,
Kerry L. Turley
