      There is one critical thing to know about the successful over wintering of
      ob hives, and that is you have to have an older queen, three years being
      ideal. A young queen is completely out of balance with the confined space
      of an ob hive with the brood space/rate competing catastrophically with food
      storage space.

      It also helps with the swarming problems mentioned in an early post and it's
      a nice way to pension off a favourite queen that you might just need again
      for next years breeding.
