I understand being "unable to walk up the stairs" - although I think that would also make a person unable to participate in our class. However I do not understand being "afraid" to walk up the stairs, unless there was some sort of phobia or PSTD. I mean, if you're afraid to walk up the stairs, how are you going to deal with someone swinging a stick at you, even in our slow practice sessions? There are much scarier things that stairs in self-defense training!
This is definitely a first for me. I wish I could show you a photo of the staircase so you can see that it is a sturdy, wide, perfectly safe staircase. The same student also mentioned that it would be helpful if there was a sign on the door. The banner over the door is so enormous, I find it hard to believe anyone could miss it (not that he did, he definitely had the right address, it was just the stairs that foiled him).
Not sure if this link will work but the banner is rather huge https://maps.google.com/maps?q=4+west+18th+street&hl=en&ll=40.73881,-73.992561&spn=0.001041,0.617294&sll=40.738600,-73.992700&layer=c&cbp=13,205.66,,0,0.03&cbll=40.73881,-73.992561&hnear=4+W+18th+St,+New+York,+10011&t=m&z=11&iwloc=A&panoid=yfKW1_Dk4nz-HrDzXtMq2A
