*Backpacking Background*: I have been in the outdoors since I was a
toddler. My mother introduced me to backpacking when I was in the
backpack. I in good turn joined the Boy Scouts to get away from Mom on
the weekend hikes. My first backpack trip with the Boy Scouts was down a
dirt road to a park and camp sight. That was my last trip with the Boy
Scouts. Since then I have done most of my backpacking in the Sierra Nevada.
I have been a professional river guide and kayak instructor for the last
11 years, however I currently work at a family establishment in
Bakersfield, California. Working a “Real Job” keeps me away from the
outdoors a bit more than I would like. My summers are busy between city
work and river guiding. Much of my packing is done on the river in the
summer. This has driven me to long winter trips and short summer trips
for the last several years. I took up snow shoeing to help get into
winter packing. I have found that less is often more in my backpacking
and my summer trips I find myself as happy in a pair of Chocos carrying
my pocket knife as I do with a heavy pack and big boots.
Wow a sandal that protects my toes. These seem almost like shoes. So my
first question is do these sandals feel more like shoes or more like
sandals on my feet. This leads to how well to these sandals shed water.
The sandals are "lined with hydrophobic foam for comfort and fit." Are
they comfortable, how well do they fit my feet? Does the foam truly
repel water? How about after a summer of being in the water? These
sandals have an antibacterial footbed. How well does this work? Sandals
that don't stink after extended use would be impressive. I also want to
know how well the soles work. Do they provide good traction on river
rocks and uneven surfaces? I'm curious how well the toe of this sandal
will allow me to lock my foot into the raft when I'm guiding river
trips. These sandals are supposed to be easy on and off, are they easy
to get on and off? Do they stay on when they are supposed to or will
they come off my feet when swimming a rapid?
My test plan is to wear the sandals for all of my light terrain
backpacking trips this summer as well as for river rafting trips. I will
be guiding commercial trips throughout the summer, including remote
wilderness rafting trips on the Forks of the Kern River. These trips
incorporate both hiking and river rafting as well as hanging out in
camp. I will wear these sandals on all of these river trips as well as a
few weekend backpacking trips in the Sierra Nevada and Piute Mountains.
I am planning a trip to the East Coast this fall and hope to spend some
time on the AT, I will take these sandals with me and use them whenever
I can on that trip.
I wear a size 9.5 mens shoe I would prefer the H2 model, since I plan to
use these in the water a good bit, but the Newport is fine with me as
well. My preferred color is charcoal.
