ORONO, Maine - Junior Matt Nieto scored with 3.8 seconds left in overtime to lift the No. 13 Boston University men's ice hockey team to a thrilling 5-4 victory at Maine on Saturday evening at Alfond Arena.
Freshman Danny O'Regan scored two goals and assisted on the winner for the Terriers, who saw a 4-1 third-period lead vanquish before coming away with the win.
With seconds ticking down in overtime, O'Regan sprung sophomore Evan Rodrigues for a 2-on-0 with Nieto. Rodrigues skated up the right side and waited until the last second before passing off to Nieto, who converted at the left post to seal a three-point weekend for the Terriers following Friday's 3-3 draw with the Black Bears.
In goal, freshman Sean Maguire recorded a career-high 40 saves to help BU improve to 14-12-2 overall and 11-7-2 in Hockey East play. Sophomore Cason Hohmann registered a goal and an assist while freshman Ahti Oksanen and senior Ryan Santana each earned two power-play assists.
Maine opened the scoring on a power play late in the first period before the Terriers but together a run of four straight goals that was started and capped by tallies from O'Regan.
BU struck three times in the middle period, including a strike by freshman Matt Grzelcyk with 51 seconds remaining in the stanza, before O'Regan pushed the lead to 4-1 on a power-play tally just 1:03 into the third.
Less than three minutes later, the Black Bears began their rally when senior Joey Diamond scored from the right crease at the 3:59 mark.
With the Terriers on their sixth and final power-play chance of the evening, Maine came through shorthanded to make it a one-goal game with 11:25 left in regulation.
With goaltender Martin Ouellette (29 saves) pulled in favor of an extra attacker, freshman Steve Swavely forced overtime when he redirected a shot over Maguire from the inner edge of the left circle off an initial offering by sophomore Jake Rutt.
Maine held a 44-34 shot advantage and went 1-for-5 on the power play. BU converted on two of its six chances with the man advantage.
BU will return to action on Friday (Feb. 22) when they open a weekend home-and-home series with No. 14/15 UMass Lowell at Agganis Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
