      That's me.
I'm feeling completely inadequate to this job.
And now that I've gotten that out of the way.

      How do I get unstuck?
I'm afraid I really need a hands-on teacher, and I'm gonna wear youse
guys' patience right down to the nerve endings, but...

      Here I am whining again.

Okay, first question: how long might it take for the boiler to fill
that first time? How do I know if it's full? When I did the first
couple of steps, nothing happened, but the light didn't blink like
it's supposed to, so I did the note says to do if the pilot light is
flashing (toggle switch to "run" and push both short pull buttons).

The refill light never "glowed", and when the pump stopped it didn't
blink. Still I did the steps the instructions tell you to do if the
pump stops and the lights blink and the pump seemed to run and seemed
to be pulling water out of the kettle. And then it stopped. But is
      it full?

Well, just on the off chance, I turned the knob over there to 6:00.
      Nothing happens.

      So????

How do I know if individual parts are doing their jobs? How do I know
      if water is flowing?

      Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!
      Hankies puleeze !!!!

Your machine definitely keeps the conversations interesting. It only takes
about 10 seconds or so to fill the boiler. at least on my machine. I don't
believe it fills up all the way, as it creates super heated steam and not so
much hot water.. There is a Liquid level probe that is on top of the Boiler
that tells the Control Box to stop filling when it senses water.

With the switch in the 9:00 position.. on, but no heater, you should still
get water each time you press a douser button. You will hear the pump for
the couple of seconds that water is flowing.

Do you get anything out when you hit those buttons?? If not. stop there and
figure out why.. If you do, then we can move on to the heater function.

Let me . or all of us know..

To fill.. Place the toggle in the “right” position (program), then push the
single and double ½ cup buttons at the same time.. this turns the pump on if
              it is not completely full.

Put the switch back to the “left” position (run)

I just got back from the vet after having rescued my 11 pound new old
blind dog from the jaws of a usually delightful pit next door. My little
old blind guy slipped through the smallest hole in the fence and had no
idea where he was or what was getting him.
He got bit. He bit me.
We're both a bit the worse for wear and will be sitting out the next few
days waiting to see if he gets better....
                Yucko.

                    Ray,

Back when I first got daring enough to fill my boiler, I followed the
directions in the manual (same one that's posted under the files section
here) and I don't remember there being any typos... at least I was able
to get my machine to fill properly by using the described routine.

If you can point it out to me, and we can agree that it is stated
originally wrong, I can try to make an edit to the manual to make things
right - I just don't know what the typo might be, since it worked for
                    me.

                    Thanks,

                    David

under filing.. The Note: under Item 7 was incorrect.

Sentence b. States “Carefully place the switch in the left position” This
would be the Run position… not the Program Position.

I have an addendum page with Initial Fill Instructions that states it
correctly “Place the switch in the right position”

I had this pointed out by an Espresso Repair shop I took it to many years
                        ago.

                        Ray,

Back when I first got daring enough to fill my boiler, I followed the
directions in the manual (same one that's posted under the files section
here) and I don't remember there being any typos... at least I was able
to get my machine to fill properly by using the described routine.

If you can point it out to me, and we can agree that it is stated
originally wrong, I can try to make an edit to the manual to make things
right - I just don't know what the typo might be, since it worked for
                        me.

                        Thanks,

                        David

Which reminds me. There are two of those toggle switches that the
directions refer to. (The one that says Run one way and Program the
other.) One of them on the front panel and the other one on the boiler
side of the panel that separates the boiler compartment from the motor
compartment. Does one of them override the other? Do you have to move
both of them to Run and then back to Program? Any ideas???/
Okay, that's it for me today.
                          Scrambled is as scrambled does.

                            Susan!

Eeeeegads - you have TWO Program/Run switches???

These ES-1A machines never cease to amaze me! I would say that this
might be part or your whole problem... you may need to do some wire
tracing to see how they are connected... are they both connected??? I
think Tex's switch is on the wall between the boiler & the brain box.
Mine is on my front panel - up under the top crossbar.

Ray, My RUN position is to the LEFT - but I wonder how different this
                            is from machine to machine?

Who else has 2 Program/Run switches? Front mounted? Internally mounted
                            on the bulkhead?

                            David

                                Susan…

At least the Run position is to the left on both of them.. If you put either
one (or both) in the Program (right) position and push the 1 and 2 - ½ cup
buttons at the same time, does it try to fill the boiler?

If the boiler wont fill, then you have to start checking the plumbing,
refill solenoid, check valve, pressure switch, etc… to see what is cutting
it off before it fills. Does your pressure gauge work? I didn’t want to read
back thru your e-mails to find it.

Worst case may be to unhook the inlet tube to the boiler and see if the pump
continuously pumps water onto you, the floor, or wherever you might aim it.
If it does, then you have something shutting off the pump before it reaches
full. Check the pressure switch to see if it is open or closed when it
stops.. The contacts could be bad, or someone has messed with it.

                                This is a start..

                                Ray

Yup. Here's the one the instructions refer to

And then, just when you think you've got a grip....here's another one

                                http://ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/BUG-is-Bunn/photos/view/d114?b=93

So? Anyone else have two of these?

Yes. It sucks about an inch of water out of the top of a 1-gallon
jug. Then the pump shuts off, and the water that got pulled out of
the jug returns to the jug.

Susan… It makes about the most sense than anything else we have heard today.. It doesn’t do much good to fill the Boiler if the solenoid doesn’t close

It makes about the most sense than anything else we have heard today.. It
doesn’t do much good to fill the Boiler if the solenoid doesn’t close and
keep the water in there.. I would probably start there.. Or the Check Valve
which is also in line with it and should stop things from going backwards..

Well, dang, that makes sense, Craig. The solenoid itself didn't get
scoured out when all of the copper pipes got descaled.

What do I know about cleaning it?
