Jake puts too fine a point on the differences between roaster types - any home roaster will give you coffee to kill for. It then becomes a matter of buying the type of beans that best appeals to your tastes.

I like most Brazilian beans as the base for my espresso blends and either a good dry-processed Yemen or Ethiopian for the fruit. One thing's for sure, once you start roasting your own coffee you'll understand how this hobby can turn into an obsession. ;-)

      > Some further thoughts on a roaster for you Ed...the I-Roar you're looking at is the better part of $200. For another $100, you can get into a drum roaster (Behmor). Drum roasters are purported to do a better job of roasting beans for espresso extraction over their fluid bed brethern. Tex can jump in here anytime and correct me if I'm wrong but it's my understand that fluid bed roasters bring out the brightness in a bean whereas the drum roaster will tend to mute that flavor component. I don't know about you but I don't care for an overly bright shot of anything. In the vac pot, it's acceptable but I don't care to drink bright espresso. So for me (if I were you) I wouldn't consider anything but a drum roaster and if you're just want to get into this w/o getting your feet soaked, $300 isn't a lot of money as far as drum roasters go. Others may have better or different ideas
