      Thanks for the helpful comments John and Jim.

      The batteries are dead in the units and I could do a replacement either
      with a different type of cell or AAs. However, the units are to be left
      in remote operation, so a firmware change would remove another variable.
      I will go down the JKISS route.

      My eprom programmer died last time I use it (the smoke was let out of
      some components), so I now need to either troubleshoot that or ask
      someone else to do blow them for me. I suspect the latter will happen as
      I want to move the node projects forwards.
