      Carbon-zinc, alkaline and lithium batteries are 1.5v, nickel metal hydride and nickel cadmium batteries are 1.25v.

      It has to do with the chemistry, not the mah rating.

      In any event, ANY of them are suitable for use in the radio.

      From his descriptiom, it sounds like there was an internal short that caused the overheating. But that is all I am using is his description of what occured.

      Obviously, I have no idea what actually occurred.
