          1. It WILL appear in the USA. There are even pics of it put out from
Uniden (Uniden AMERICA, that is). Now, Uniden AUSTRALIA may not have any
plans for a compatible version, but the two divisions have little to do
          with each other.

It is definitely not a prank. Uniden isn't that stupid to think they
could fool everyone for long. If you don't believe me - just wait for a
couple weeks to a couple months and you will see. The release date is
Q1, 2009, and pranks never limit their lifespan like that (that's why
you see pranks decades old still floating around).

Wayne, I'm guessing Uniden Australia will eventually release a
UBCD396XT but the Australian versions have different firmware to the
US models (different cellular frequencies blocked being the main
diff) which take time to compile; typically it takes AT LEAST six
months after the US release before you will see a particular model
down under, if they release it at all?!

It does not surprise me to learn that UA have not heard about the XT
yet, at least not the stooges that answer the phones anyway, they're
just towing the party line. Maybe the guys that re-jig the firmware
may have gotten a heads up by now but you won't get any info out of
them with regards to a release date!

You could of course import one yourself but UA won't want to know you
if you have a warranty issue and apparently it wouldn't properly
track some of the Aussie 800Mhz trunk systems (some of the channels
are in a blocked range of the US model) or some sites on the NSW-GRN
(which uses three split 400Mhz bands).

Still, it's interesting that they would actually tell you it was
            a "Christmas prank"?

            Happy Holidays to all!
            The Bigfella

P.S. "UBCD396XT", come on guys, there's still a couple of letters
left in the alphabet you can throw in there! :)

I know Paul since I was a beta tester for 3 of the recent Uniden scanners. The only time Paul has joked might be April 1 and within a day he would let you know it is a joke. The users manual for the BC396xt is on the internet. No one is going to write a user manual as a joke. THIS IS NOT A JOKE. Unfortunately the guy in Australia has been given bad information or is just ignorant.

It would be *BAD* business for it to be a joke - I'm sure there are lots of people who are holding off at purchasing a regular 396, in hopes that the XT comes out soon. If it was a joke, they'd likely loose those customers to the GRE product. I sure wouldn't buy from Uniden again if I was 'suckered' into waiting for a scanner that isn't real.

Paul seems like a straight-up guy, I can't imagine him doing such a thing.

                      Hi again.

Let me first off start by saying I'll accept Jan Fine's first answer that " I've been given bad information by the sales, market and distribution manager at Uniden Australia " I'm in no way ignorant I have been in this game for over 25 years and hold more radio licences that you can point a stick at I also work in the industry I was simply putting up an experience as to what happened to me when I raised the question about the 396XLT in Australia as I would really like to get one, I never doubted that it would be released, no one could go to the trouble of inventing all the tech specs ect I'm more than aware of that.

I look forward to more interesting info here on this group about the 396XLT and once I am able to find out once and for sure as to weather or not it will come to Aust I'll consider ordering one from the U.S. if it is that it's not coming to Aust but yes as another poster rightly pointed out then I'm creating more problems for my self with the lock out of the 800 Mhz band because of the U.S. phone band lock out.

Which brings me to my next question are there any scanners brought from Aust and shipped to the USA to get around this problem ?.

Any chance of any one here that is close to any one in Uniden in the U.S. maybe asking the question as to weather or not we'll ever see the 396XLT here in Aust ?.

Once again thanks for all your info so far and I'm sorry if my question has tied up this other wise not so active group with chatter about what some people might not want to / are sick of reading about weather of not it was some sort of Christmas joke.

If you go back and read my original email I never doubted it was real, I was just posting what it was that Uniden Aust said all I did was raise the questions in hope of some more positive feed back which has been more than forth coming so Thanks again.

On that note I hope that every one here has a very safe and enjoyable Christmas and a great and safe start to the new year and that 2009 will be better than 2008 for every one concerned and here's hoping that the big guy in the red suite leaves you every thing you want under the tree this year.

                      Regards
                      Wayne.

Since Paul IS the product manager at Uniden for the 396 (regular and XT)...I can assure you...he is NOT joking. He'd be fired in a heartbeat if he were joking.

Wish I could get my hands on the new toys for the holidays. I have 15 people in south florida that want the new BC396xt when it hits the market. If anyone knows of someone that will take our order let me know. Thanks.
