      Doors at 7:30 p.m.; show at 8:00 p.m.
The group claims to be searching for a title, but New Balkan Trio is an
apt moniker for this band of instrumental masters making its debut tonight
at Ashkenaz. Both the trio and its music are new, as the players combine
their decades of experience into fresh Balkan jazz tunes and arrangements,
seasoned with their onstage interplay over driving Balkan dance rhythms.
Bassist and multi-instrumentalist Stuart Brotman is renowned for his other
bands, Brave Old World, the Klezmatics and Aman. Reeds player Sheldon Brown
has worked in countless Bay Area groupings, notably the wild San Francisco
Klezmer Experience and his own Sheldon Brown Group. He also performs with
Cuban-born pianist Omar Sosa. Cimbalom player Roman Titcu is from Romania,
and plays with the band Danubius.

In their only Bay Area appearance this summer, the bi-coastal accordion
duo Max & Minka play matching Bugari accordions (the handbuilt Italian
instruments are the Rolls Royces of the accordion world) for their madcap
dance music, mixing Balkan, klezmer, tango and Yiddish folk songs. They draw
inspiration from their membership in such ensembles as the San Francisco
Klezmer Experience, the Zagnut Brass Band, Gonifs and PECTOPAH. As a duo Max
& Minka performed their original scores accompanying silent films "The
Patchwork Girl of Oz" and "His Majesty the Scarecrow of Oz" at Berkeley's
Fine Arts Cinema. Minka has also appeared with Michael Tilson Thomas at
      Davies Symphony Hall.
