      Dear People

A serious and ongoing problem exists at Melbourne's Grey headed flying fox colony.

The colony roosts alongside the Yarra Bend Golf Course next to tee-off three. On three occasions, twice by myself, golfers have been seen to turn towards the bats at the tee-off the hit balls at the sleeping animals. This in spite of signs a few metres away warning of the illegality of interfering with the bats.

The missiles have an enornmous potential to kill and maim the bats and their young. The last attack occured on the 9th of October. It is likely that many more attacks occur than are witnessed.

The VAWA has proposed netting, security cameras and better signage be installed and had a meeting on course to discuss the same. This intervention would prevent ninety percent of offenders from offending ninety percent of the time and would be cheap to install. It would also have the added advantage of reducing the likelihood of social conflict occuring between activists and the golf club.

Unfortunately Dept of Sustainability and Environment and Parks Victoria staff thought that this would "send the wrong message" and would "punish" golfers.

Please help me to send a strong message to the Dept of Sustainability, Park Victoria and the Yarra Bend Trust that we call for netting and security cameras as the only methods that will be likely to deter most attacks on our vulnerable flying foxes.

Just a few words is ok. Please advocate strongly and call for better protection for the bats by the installation of netting and security cameras at tee three Yarra Bend Golf Club, Yarra Bend:
