BART fares going up next month; more needed for quake fixes

Oakland (AP) -- Bay Area Rapid Transit riders will be digging a
little deeper January 1st as fares rise 5 percent.

But that may not be the end.

Yesterday -- BART directors indicated they may need to boost fares
again to pay for a billion dollar earthquake retrofit project.

In November -- voters turned down a bond measure to finance the quake
upgrading. But officials say the work is still needed -- and riders
may have to pay for it.

Not all directors were ready to get on board that particular train,
however. Dan Richard said the board needs to move cautiously. He said
that if a fare hike costs the system riders -- it could be a mistake.
