      City to receive pedestrian bridge

      As part of its [BATN: the San Mateo County Transportation
      Authority's] $87 million plan to extend auxiliary lanes on Highway
      101 in San Mateo County, Burlingame will be getting a pedestrian
      bridge at Broadway, officials said.

      The bridge, which would accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists, is
      now in its preliminary design phase. Work could begin in 2004, San
      Mateo County Transit District spokeswoman Jayme Maltbie said.

      The aim would be to make the area safer for pedestrians.

      "Access is very poor in that area," Maltbie said. "It's very unsafe."

      Burlingame City Planner Meg Monroe said the thin sidewalks on the
      current bridge are inadequate.

      "If you fall off, you fall right into a lane of moving traffic and
      people have fallen off and gotten hurt," Monroe said.

      "We have been trying to get pedestrian access across there for a long
      time."

      The main thrust of the project, the auxiliary lanes, usually start at
      an on-ramp and lead to an off-ramp. They effectively widen the
      highway for short stretches and help ease traffic flow.

      "Auxiliary lanes improve the flow of traffic, they reduce
      congestion," Maltbie said.

      Sound walls

      The project also includes sound walls along the Rollins Road
      frontage. Initial plans call for a 14-foot-high wall south of
      Cadillac Way to Toyon Drive and a 16-foot-high wall from Toyon Drive
      to Corbitt Avenue.

      There is some concern that the first portion of wall will obstruct
      the view of businesses from the highway and the issue will be
      revisited.

      In June, crews finished the Hillsdale Boulevard to Ralston Avenue
      portion and will begin the portion from Ralston Avenue to Atherton's
      Marsh Road in about six months. After that segment is completed,
      crews will begin work on the part from Third Avenue in San Mateo to
      Millbrae Avenue. The whole project should be wrapped up by 2007.

      Another goal of the project will be to raise the pedestrian bridge
      across Highway 101 at Monte Diablo Avenue in San Mateo. Maltbie said
      the bridge has been deemed to too low and the height will be
      increased as a safety precaution.

      Another bridge

      Meanwhile, the City of Millbrae is eyeing its own pedestrian bridge
      project that would cross Highway 101 at Millbrae Avenue.

      Senior Civil Engineer Khee Lim said the city is looking for funding
      for the project, which would be built parallel to the overpass on the
      north said.

      Lim said the bridge would be a boon to bikers, who now have to
      navigate perilous traffic conditions.

      "It's dangerous right now with the numbers of vehicles," Lim said.

      The project is expected to remain in the predesign phase one more
      year, Lim said.
