Freight train strikes vehicle with 3 passengers in Santa Clara, no injuries

A Union Pacific freight train struck a vehicle with three occupants on the tracks in Santa Clara tonight, but no one was injured in the crash, a spokesman for the transportation company said.

The train was traveling from Watsonville to Oakland when it struck the vehicle near Agnew Road at about 7 p.m., spokesman Aaron Hunt said.

"For everyone to walk away, our train northbound was moving pretty slowly," Hunt said.

An ambulance responded but all three occupants in the vehicle declined treatment, according to Hunt. No crewmembers on the train were injured.

Hunt did not immediately have details as to why the vehicle was on the tracks or why the train was traveling slowly. Union Pacific Railroad police are working with local police to investigate the incident.

He said the train did not sustain any serious damage and the scene has been cleared.
