Hwy. 160 closings -- drawbridge repairs

      By Erin Hallissy

Starting today and continuing every night this month, Highway 160
between the Antioch bridge and Rio Vista will be closed from 9 p.m.
to 5 a.m. so crews can repair a drawbridge over 3 Mile Slough.

Caltrans said signs would be in place to guide motorists to detours
but warned motorists to expect delays of up to 90 minutes. Traffic
from Rio Vista will be routed west on Highway 12 to Interstates 80
and 680 and then east on Highway 4. A similar detour in the opposite
direction will be made from Antioch for northbound traffic.

The bridge, which has a counterweight suspender system that elevates
the roadway to allow boats to pass, retains the original wire ropes
installed in 1947. They were scheduled for replacement by late 2009,
but inspections revealed that the ropes were cracking and could
      break.

During the daytime in April, the bridge, which usually opens five to
seven times daily, will be raised only at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
