BART stations near SFO will have free parking

Daily parking will be free at BART stations in South San Francisco,
San Bruno and Millbrae, starting Monday. BART and SamTrans officials
announced the parking plan Tuesday, part of a plan to increase "Our
hope is by eliminating parking fees, it will make use of the BART
extension more economical," said SamTrans spokeswoman Jayme Maltbie
      Kunz.

The two public transit agencies have been engaged in a dispute over
the cost and payment for operating the extension, whose completion
was celebrated by both sides last year. Unexpectedly low ridership on
the line has caused financial strain for BART and SamTrans, which is
responsible for paying the operating losses incurred by the extension.

Earlier this month, BART threatened to sue SamTrans over late
payments, but the two agencies have agreed to continue discussions,
      including ways to boost ridership.
