      BART catching on fast

Preliminary numbers for the Bay Area Rapid Transit extension into San
Mateo County show ridership has exceeded expectations for the opening
weeks of the new rail lines.

BART spokesman Mike Healy said yesterday officials had hoped to see
an average 6,569 riders take the train into the San Francisco
International Airport station each weekday during the month of July.
So far, an average of 6,891 riders pass through the station each
      weekday.

On Thursday, some 8,444 people used the new airport station to head
      to their holiday weekend destination.

"I would say without question at this point it's a success story,"
      Healy said.
