Bay Area Rapid Transit is beginning a major elevator replacement
project Monday at four stations in San Francisco, according to BART

Crews will be replacing the street-level elevator enclosures at the
Civic Center, Embarcadero, Montgomery and Powell Street BART/Muni
Metro stations, according to BART officials, who say the project

The entire project is anticipated to last until April 2010. The
elevator at the Civic Center station will be the first one closed,
and will be shut down until April.

The Embarcadero elevator will be closed from May to August, the
Montgomery Street elevator will be closed from September to December,
and the Powell Street elevator will be closed from January 2010 to
April 2010, according to BART officials.

Although customers will have no elevator service to the street level,
escalators will remain in service, and BART will increase preventative
maintenance to reduce escalator breakdowns during the closures.

Customers relying on the elevators to enter and exit at Civic Center
during the closure should exit at Powell Street BART or Van Ness Muni
      stations, according to BART officials.
