I believe the new Known World Handbook (available for sale at www.sca.org) also has some very helpful articles on court etiquette and courtly behavior in general, all written with the SCA newcomer in mind. Also, feel free to ask your local heralds about court protocol, this is one of our areas of expertise.

My Lady, and indeed all of the Barony,

I am going to plan to have 2-3 sessions at various meetings, events and practices in the local area during the next 2-3 months, during which I will cover appropriate court ettiquete.

If any of you are interested in learning the correct behavior while in court and if called up in court, then please attend one of these sessions.  They will last about 30 minutes tops and will help to acclimate newer gentles, or even seasoned peers who need to be refreshed, on the basics.

A List of these sessions, will be posted in the near future to this list, and all canton lists.

Expect one such session to be held at All Souls.

In Service to the Dream and the Barony,

Herr Alexander Adelbrecht von Markelingen, APF
        Baronial Pursuivant Ayreton

Last summer (2010) I had the pleasure of being called up for an honorable mention in an A&S competition, but that pleasure was short-lived as I realized, halfway up to the throne, that I had no idea of what to do once I got there. True to form, I was -- I am told -- cutely awkward at best.

I don't want that to happen again. If ever I find myself under the royal or baronial gaze again, I would rather not disgrace myself, my canton, and my family of friends in the same manner twice. (I'm sure that, all unwitting, I will accidentally find many *different* ways to embarrass us all.)

Is there a regular occurrence which takes place at the shire or baronial level, within Chicagoland, at which one might request instruction in the forms and behaviors most appropriate in the courts of gentle folk? Preferably NOT on a Friday night or a Saturday, since I can never attend those due to religious obligation?

I will be hosting the first Session at the Baronial Business Meeting on Sunday October 30th. More sessions to come in the weeks and months following that.

I personally learn better from example and experience... That is after all, why I joined the SCA, to learn by experience and not just by books.

I was always a hands on learner. I believe that a lot of our SCA folk are similar. Even if we don't all learn better from experience, we at least prefer to learn that way in the context of the SCA. Yes, reading has it's place in the Society, I will always praise that fact. However, it is by our doing that we learn the most logical way things might have been done. It is possible for 2 people to read something and have a completely different interpretation of it, but when something is done you find out what actually works and what is less then efficient.

By Doing a demonstration session with opportunities to practice one can see what we are trying to tell someone with our books and then we can offer them the corrections to their actions in a polite and positive way, without them feeling awkward because they have no clue and might feel that people are judging them in real court.
