      What gpu are you using? The cheese grater is a very capable machine, but it would need a beefier gpu to be fully happy. You should upgrade it to a RX580 Sapphire, the one Apple sold with egpu kit for a short while. Actually, they even qualified it officially for use in a Mac Pro a few weeks back. 



      It would need 10.3.6 tu run happily and natively. Best would be to upgrade your os to that version by using the installer on the App Store. It contains a firmware update for the Mac Pro - yep, for a decade old machine!

      I hope your Mac is already running its OS from a ssd drive, it's easy to install one in the optical bay as you probably don't have two DVD burners.
