Retro Blue is Jim Ryan’s new band reaching back to the urban blues of the ‘40s and ‘50s and soaring beyond the outer edge of free-style improvisation. The journey rumbles through several of Jim's original blues & jump tunes (Run from Baby Blues, Bullshittin’ Charlie, Death of the Sun, & Jimmy’s Jump) written over vast reaches of time with Jim singing or shouting his heartfelt lyrics, and will also blast into the unknown depths of total high-energy improvisation. Veterans Bob Marsh on bass, and Timothy Orr on drums will stoke the engines and soar into dizzying spirals of death-defying gymnastics or floating sonic suspensions. Jim on tenor & alto sax, and flute, as well as vocals will do the very best that he can. Karl Alfonso Evangelista will play guitar; lifting Jim up when he falls down and attempting to get him to sing in tune.

"I wasn't too excited about this release because I didn't recognize any of the names on it, but the press release talked about how their first gig was a Sundara Kanda, or musical celebration highlighting the exploits of Hanuman, the devotee of Lord Rama. It also referred to the group being initiated into the tribe of Saraswati. In other words, these guys aren't in it just to get a gig at the knitting factory and a mention in The Wire... after reading all that i kinda had to listen, and yeah, this is some serious shit. There are seven tracks on here, but they really all blend into one overall scorching album length meditation. Tenor Saxophone, Alto Clarinet, Electric Bass, and Drums honed and focused into one fiery voice, ragin', full on." - www.blastitude.com
