      Okay, this is a long shot, but I recall a scene in _The Agony and the
      Ecstasy_ (okay, not a hugely period source), where Michelangelo is asked to pay an
      entrance fee at the gates of Bologna, and they describe marking people's thumbs
      with red wax to see who's paid up...hand stamp, essentially. Wouldn't be
      surprised to find there was an entrance charge to major fairs and the like...might
      be a place to look.
