And was it more than that in period? Sumptuary laws were the way that those who 'had' told those who either 'didn't have' or 'shouldn't have' what was 'above' their station and give those who 'had' a 'lawful' reason for being rude about it.
I'm not saying it's a good thing for others to be rude about sumptuary laws, but it is, unfortunately, to be expected. Wherever there is a law that says someone can't do something - those who are allowed to do it are gonna run and tattle when they see it happening. It's part of the sad side to human nature.
