- My Lord,This has been a most delightful inspiration and I thank those who have responded. I will take these suggestions to heart!... in a less Viking manner. :)Brighid>>M'Lady,
I can only speak for my household as others treat the
Enchanted Ground concept in different ways. On board
the Akula (we are a viking house based around a
drakkar) the evening meal on Saturday of an event is
the time when the 21st century fades the furthest into
the background. It starts with our food. We try to
make it as period as possible within the constraints
of budget and the talents of that weekend's head cook.
The conversations revolve around the days activities
and what de ads were done by which member of the crew.
After the meal is done and we relax around the fire
it is time for the entertainment. If we have had a
guest for dinner then they are asked to tell us a
story, recite a poem or sing a song in return for the
hospitality received (this is only requested and they
may decline if they wish). If we have did not have
the pleasure of good company, then the bardic falls
upon one of the crew. As we are all hams at heart,
there is usually a mad scramble to be first.
The Enchanted Ground is a wonderful idea and it can be
accomplished with very little effort. It also doesn't
take a household to achieve it either, just one person
deciding that they are only going to behave in as
period a way as they can.
Give it a shot and I hope that you achieve what ever
level you are most comfortable with.

There is a Period Encampment at Estrella. If you are interested in camping there let me know, and I can put you in touch with our autocrat. Or go to www.estrellawar.org and look for "Period Encampment". Anyone who wants to is more than welcome to come camp with us.
The camp is very near to the Period Demo Center, which is where a bank of 4 ovens are located. Anyone who wants to is welcome, nay, encouraged to use the ovens!
Also, if you want a nice space to sit in the shade and work on a project the Demo Center is a lovely place to do it. I'm also looking for people to demonstrate things for the school tours on Friday morning, which is less restful, but can be fun.

I have always wanted to set up some kind of private "campground" for period
encampments. I'm still planning mt tent and other camping gear, and figure
why go to all the time, effort and expense to only use the stuff a few times
a year. I'd like to camp period even in mundane campgrounds, but wouldn't it
be more fun to have a place with outdoor ovens and kitchen area, and camping
area big enough to share? I'm going house hunting in about 6 to 9 months,
and if I end up getting a little acreage, I may suss out the logistics of a
little period campground.

Yes, it is "Enchanted Ground" not 'land'. Merci for pointing that out. Fingers getting ahead of the brain while typing...
And I shall have an Enchanted Gazebo and I have some Golden Rope to surround it with.
I have tried to locate Cariadoc/David Friedman to let him know I have been inspired by what he has done at Pennsic. I found a mundane website/blog of his, but my message was bounced back to me. If anyone knows his current email or want to send him my email, please let me know.
