59090How did people hold their pens?
- Jul 4, 2012This is turning into one of those 'easy to ask, difficult to answer' questions, so I hope someone can point me in the right direction!
I can find plenty of information about palaeography, and the different scripts used by people to write over time, but do we know *how* they held their writing instruments?
The earliest I can find is the 1617 "The Pens Excellencie" fol. 34r http://www.english.cam.ac.uk/ceres/ehoc/billingsley/
which sounds awfully like how we hold pens and pencils today, except for resting the pen on the top of your middle finger.
Is there anything earlier that includes pen-holding instructions, or anyone know of any studies on how pen-holding techniques developed?
