- I am getting a lot of help, and I appriciate it. As originally
stated, I no very little about boats, but am trying to learn quickly.
I picked the "Unsanctioned" for many reasons.
Big lake in a valley between high mountain ranges. Storms (wind) come
up extremely quickly, immediate white caps etc. Not open ocean, but
in some areas there is nowhere to hide.
The locals 5' waves are fairly regular and there has been waves
large enough to cause ocean going tugs (they pull log booms) to
release booms and head for protection.
It is a twenty mile trip to anywhere. Lake is about 100 miles long,
but very narrow, maybe 6 miles. Look up Upper and Lower Arrow Lakes,
British Columbia, Canada.
I would looked atdisplacement hull, but maybe too slow. I figured
something fast enough to run for cover if you can, and seaworthy
enough to ride it out if you can't.
I am out on the water summer and winter. Need a cabin I can heat in
winter, cabin tall enough to stand up in for extended periods of
time, etc. frequently fishing for 8hours and still have to run home.
Sometimes below freezing.
We would never, well probably never, sleep on board. Great dry
storage area in bow.
I already have a lightweight 35hp outboard. Almost new.
Nice and wide. Room for a couple of adults and grandchildren. Stable
platform to walk around, fish, carry supplies, etc. It appears that
Atkins boats have a great reputation.
Motor in a well. I think that would make it quiet.
There's more, Maybe I can build better than I can buy, I won't be
trying to shave costs at every corner, etc.
Last for now, If I get in trouble reading plans, or understanding a
nautical phrase will group come to rescue.
- Sounds like you've thought things out real well. I have to admit that I
never looked closely at Unsanctioned because I was put off by the styling,
but after taking a good look I'd say she's a Good Boat and will probably
work real well on the Arrow Lakes (any of the old steamers that used to
run up there still around?). As for the styling, I think one could learn
to love it if she was finished off well. At least she's pre tail fin! <g>
I'm sure you can build a better boat than you can buy off the boat
dealer's lot. Nothing manufactured in recent years will give the
performance and accommodations of Unsanctioned and use a 35 hp. motor!
Please keep us up to date on your project, even if you don't stumble on
any nautical terms. <g>

School days, I believe, are the unhappiest in the whole span of
human existence . They are full of dull, unintelligible tasks,
new and unpleasant ordinances, brutal violations of common sense
and common decency. <H. L. Mencken>
