In Octobber I will take the Sunset Limited to New orleans then either drive or take a nother train to charlotte NC then fly back...  going to the NASCAR race.

only wish AMtrak had more frequent service in some areas. trains are comfortable food is good and you meet interesting people on the train.

Amtrak trains westbound are odd an eastbound even

1 sunset limited to los angeles (southern AZ) via benson, maricopa, and yuma (it should stop more places)
2 sunset limited to new orleans
4 southwest chief to chicago vi Flagstaff and Winslow
3 southwest chief to los angeles via flagstaff and winslow (northern AZ)

I took the #1 and #4 trains had laptop and GPS as well as scanner with me all the time. Just put the scanner in search mode and it found the active frequencies. the frequency will change depending on where the train is.

Amtrak any day over TSA airport nonsense and no captain to turn on fasten seat belt sign, lots of room if you are tall too

It's really interesting to listen to Amtrak while on the train, as you will
likely know the source of many delays that they don't necessarily mention
over the PA system. Use headphones, and Amtrak has no problem with this.
I've seen others with scanners on the same train as me.

If you're not on the train, in Arizona Amtrak uses tracks hosted by BNSF and
UP, so the frequencies are shared by all trains. It can be interesting if
that interests you. The odds of hearing Amtrak specific are low considering
all Amtrak trains through Arizona only go 0-1 times per day.

There's a great site listing frequencies for each route at
      http://www.on-track-on-line.com/amtrak-freqs.shtml

Amtrak comes by my place twice daily here in Toltec,AZ usually at night I
only hear them say anything if they are overtaking another train on the
siding or waiting on the new double track "Highball the roll by" and all
this happens on the road channel in my case 160.320 Union Pacific "Gila Sub"
I haven't heard any other channels yet from Amtrak but they do chat with the
front end of the train, oh and they never stop for anything along the main
unless it's a station these guys blow through here at 65 to 75 mph there is
a detector about a mile from my place when it go's off with "MHP 62" or
higher and a lower number of axles it tells me Amtrak is coming.
