That's when the Commission and the legislature's Black & Puerto Rican Caucus will hold a forum on issues surrounding reading instruction in Connecticut--everything from training student teachers in the science of reading to summer reading loss. Join us at 1 p.m. in Room 1-B of the Legislative Office Building, at 300 Capitol Avenue in Hartford.
Lawmakers briefed on two-generational strategies
The Commission on Children led a briefing March 23 for the legislature's Appropriations Committee regarding the emerging two-generational approach to providing social services. "Two-gen" focuses on the family by, among other things, linking the employment-related services that adults need with the early-childhood programs their children need. The goal is to break intergenerational cycles of poverty while also making services more streamlined and effective. CT-N video, PowerPoint slides, and more
Getting to know ALICE
Fully 25 percent of Connecticut households have earnings above the federal poverty level but below what United Way calls the ALICE threshold, or the income that's necessary in their communities to cover basic needs. On March 10, the Commission and the United Ways of Connecticut held a public forum where legislators, policy experts, and ALICE families themselves talked about the challenges these families face and what can be done to help them.
