The date range is very wide and we cannot say what they were doing at that early stage ? At the end of that period various fish sauces - and apparently more often halmer/ muria rather then garum - were used as dips with either wine or vinegar - often the latter in that period - and all kinds of fish were dunked into the sauces with the fingers see Wilkins and Hill Archestratus: fragments from a life of luxury 2011 new edition but no different from the 1994 version. and also Olsons and Sens Archestratus of Gela 2000 Oxford. The fish wasn't just easy to handle prawns and pieces of steak but even quite soft fish it seems.

So, on top of being a cook, my main art is ceramics. I specialize usually in German and English period forms, but I've done some Greek/Roman pieces.
I am in the middle of making a fish plate. I can't link to photos right now, but it's a pedestal platter with a circular "bowl" that is trimmed inside the center. Sort of like a chip and dip platter. They were used, as far as I can tell, from 3500bc until 450bc.
My question is, how were they used? Was garum placed in the bowl and some sort of cooked fish placed around it? Or perhaps garum with other types of food? Does anyone know?
I know this is vague. I'm making this for an art competition so I'm really trying to present it in a correct way.
