- Hello All!
I'm new to this list and this is my first post. I was wondering if somebody
could clarify something for me about 'cucumbers' as they're mentioned in
Apicius. In Grocock and Grainger's recent re-translation of Apicius:
"Cucumeres The sweet salad variety of cucumber was little known in the
ancient world. This cucumber is most likely to be the 'chat melon', Cucumis
melo, an elongated gourd that was probably quite bitter and certainly needed
cooking, as in 3.4.1-3."
A search on the web didn't bring up any references to a "chat" melon.
Cucumis melo, according to Wikipedia, has 8 separate groups of which the
'Chito group' is one, Cucumis melo melo chito, and includes a "chate melon".
Most of the others seem to be sweet melons. Is this the one being referred
to, and does anybody know where I can get seeds?
