On April, 26th, in St.-Petersburg, in the building of "Sojuzpushnina"
on the Moscow prospect the beginning of fur auction was expected, but
a group of animal rights defenders (approximately 10 persons) has
blocked an entrance, having deprived people of possibility to get
inside the building. Five activists have chained themselves to the
front entrance doors. They held a banner "Fur is murder!", because
that day 170 thousand skins which have been torn off the animals were
exposed on the auctions.
Security guards of the building have tried to stop the action, but it
has become possible to unblock an entrance only when the police squad
arrived. Five defenders of animals were delivered in 29 police
Animal rights activists have decided to prevent an International Fur
Auction, because for exhibiting at these auctions, thousand animals
are deprived of their lives on fur farms or in the wild nature. On the
Russian farms, usually they are being killed with poison, and in the
woods they are caught with traps, which are forbidden to use in
Russia, but in some regions this restriction does not work.
It not the first blockade of a building by animal defenders. In 2005
they have begun a campaign against "Sojuzpushnina" and also have
blocked an entrance. This time they have declared again that while fur
trade proceeds, they won't stop their actions. Since 2005, during each
auction (3-4 times a year), animal defenders simultaneously suit
actions of protest in different cities of Russia. Their purpose is to
close "Sojuzpushnina" as a vestige of the past.
