Urgent for Maryland Residents - More Calls Needed to Ban Gestation
Crates (note: I think non-Maryland residents can freely call too)

Please forward widely and call immediately!

PLEASE CONTACT MARYLAND STATE COMMITTEE MEMBERS ON S.B. 417, THE BILL
      TO BAN GESTATION CRATES

In large-scale hog farms in the United States, many of the "breeding
stock" are kept in extreme confinement. Pregnant pigs are kept in
devices called "gestation crates"¬ómetal enclosures just two feet wide
and seven feet long that are so small that the animals cannot even
turn around. Sows confined to gestation crates can only move one step
forward or backward. The pigs are kept in these crates for the
duration of their pregnancy, nearly four months. They are taken out
to have their piglets, then re-inseminated and put back into
gestation crates. The process can go on for up to four years, when
the sows are sent to slaughter.

S.B. 417 would ban the use of gestation crates, mandating that
pregnant pigs, no matter how they are housed, must have at least
enough room to turn around. The bill would not prohibit the use of
farrowing crates, in which sows are housed for a short period of time
with their piglets. S.B. 417 targets large factory pig farms that
are displacing smaller family farms. So the legislation aims to
protect animals and small farmers alike.
