MEDIA RELEASE 01/07/05
AD ON RECKLESS DEVELOPMENT
Alternattiva Demokratika The Green Party is concerned about the abandonment of archaeological sensitive areas such as TaBaldu where works are underway, Dwejra Malta, St Paul's Bay and Marsa.
Alternattiva Demokratika spokesperson for the environment Mark Causon said that works in archaeological sensitive areas should only be done under the direct supervision of qualified archaeologists.
Alternattiva Demokratika is worried as it seems that MEPA is adopting different rules when it comes to dealing with different sensitive areas. Whilst we applaud the measures taken in Mdina and on the Mosta/Targa Gap Road where works under progress are being attentively monitored, other works on other sites are not even covered by the necessary permits. The Green Party expects MEPA to take immediate action and halt illegal works which can lead to further losses in our archaeological riches.
(The following references are of two articles which where published on the Ta' Baldu area:
Mark Causon added that the TaBaldu area, which is an important archaeological site and published studies acknowledge such archaeological importance, is a perfect example where works are taking place without the necessary permits.
a.. 'L-Ghar ta' Baldu Water Gallery', in The Sunday Times, 16th November,2003, pp. 44 - 45.
b.. 'The Roman Bath at the Ta' Baldu Tenement', in Treasures of Malta,Vol. VI no. 2, 2000, pp. 47 51 by Keith Buhagiar.)
Mark Causon also mentioned that at Dwejra (the area between Mosta, Mgarr and Rabat) at Torri Falka, some remains are being stolen and taken away while works are in progress.
Mark Causon cited another case in Bahrija, in the area known as Blata tal-Melh a fantastic cliff face that contains caves which where used as dwellings during the bronze age. Although no permits where issued, developers are already advertising the area for development. AD demands that such areas are protected immediately and no applications should even be considered.
Mark Causon concluded Another two examples of careless and unsustainable development are the Menqa historic house in St Paul's Bay where developers are awaiting for the necessary permits to demolish a historic house which is also protected by law due to it's historic importance and the works taking place in Marsa where Roman remains have been found.
