      MEDIA RELEASE 02/03/05
ORTS BIRKIRKARA LOCAL COUNCIL AND RESIDENTS

During a press conference held in John Borg Street in Birkirkara, Mario Mallia The Green Party Deputy Chairperson and Birkirkara councillor expressed Alternattiva Demokratika’s opposition to the proposed development of the playing field situated in John Borg Street.

The proposed development consists of the construction of 240 garages four storeys beneath the existing playing field.  A number of these garages will also be built above ground level. This will mean that a five-a-side football pitch which is part of the playing field will be raised above the ground floor garages.

“This proposed development is another blatant example of public land used for speculative purposes.  We cannot understand why the Playing Fields Association is involved in such a proposal with the help of a well known contractor. This proposal will not improve the quality of life of residents and children in Birkirkara.”

Mario Mallia said “The open space characteristic of the existing playing field will unfortunately end. At present over 90 garages already exist in the area around the playing fields and the proposed development will add a further 240 garages. This huge amount of garages will create further havoc in this residential area. Having over 300 garages will create more traffic around a playing field and the safety issue has to be seriously addressed.’

“The development of this playing field will mean the end of one of the last open spaces left in the area. Birkirkara is Malta’s largest town and we can never endorse the destruction of an open space which servers as a recreational area and is also a lung for such a densely populated area. Another negative impact will be the removal of a number of mature trees which are a lung in the excessively jam-packed Birkirkara area

Alternattiva Demokratika Secretary General Stephen Cachia said “The Green Party is full square behind the Birkirkara local council which has unanimously decided to lodge an official objection. The local council should be praised for taking a resolute position against the development. This is another clear example of AD Councillors working closely with councillors coming from other political parties in order to defend the residents’ interests. AD also supports the efforts being made to set up a residents’ association with the aim to oppose the development. The AD councillors are proving that cooperation at local level is possible. Our councillors are also working hard to give a voice to the resident’s needs and concerns.”

AD TAPOGGJA IL-KUNSILL LOKALI U R-RESIDENTI TA’ BIRKIRKARA

Waqt konferenza stampa li saret f’ John Borg Street, Birkirkara, id-Deputat Chairperson ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika u Kunsillier f’Birkirkara Mario Mallia esprima l-opposizzjoni ta’ AD ghall-izvilupp propost tal- playing field li hemm f’ John Borg Street.

L-izvilupp propost jikkonsisti fil-bini ta’ 240 garaxx taht il-playing field ezistenti f’ John Borg Street. Numru ta’ garaxxijiet ser jigu mibnija fil-livell tat-triq u dan jfisser li grawnd tal-futbol li jaghmel parti mil-playing field ser joghla b’sular u ser jigi livell ma l-ewwel sular tad-djar li hemm madwar il-pjazza.

“L-izvilupp propost huwa ezempju car ta’ l-uzu ta’ art pubblika ghal ghanijiet ta’ spekulazzjoni. Ma nistghux nifmhu kif l-Assocazzjoni tal –Playing Fields hija involuta f’proposta simili flimkien ma’ kuntrattur maghruf. Din il-proposta bl-ebda mod mhi ser ittejjeb il-kwalita tal-hajja tar-residenti u tfal Karkarizi.”

Mario Mallia zied “Il-karrateristika ta’spazju miftuh ta din il-pjazza ser tintilef ghal dejjem. Fil-prezent hemm 93 garaxx madwar il-pjazza u qed jigi propost l-izvilupp ta’ 240 garaxx iehor. Dan l-ammont kbir ta’ garaxxijiet ser jkompli johloq aktar konfuzjoni f’ din iz-zona residenzjali. Dawn il-garaxxijiet ser joholqu aktar traffiku madwar pjazza li tintuza mit-tfal u reisdenti u l-kwistjoni ta’ sigurta trid tigi indirizzata serjament.”

“L-izvilupp ta’ din il-pjazza ser tfisser it-tmiem ta’ wahda mill-ftit spazzji miftuha li baqa fiz-zona. Birkirkara hija l-aktar belt popolata f’Malta u qatt ma nistghu naqblu mal-qerda ta’ spazzju miftuh li jservi mhux biss ta’ rikreazzjoni ghar-residenti u tfal izda huwa ukoll wiehed mill-ahhar pulmuni taz-zona. L-izvilupp ser jfisser it-tnehhija ta’ numru kbir ta’ sigar li jservu ta’ pulmun fil-kongestjoni kollha ta’ Birkirkara.”

Is-Segretarju Generali ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika Stephen Cachia qal “AD qed tapoggja bis-shih il-Kunsill Lokali ta’ Birkirkara li unanimament iddecida biex jaghmel ogezzjoni ufficcjali kontra dan l-izvilupp. Il-posizzjoni cara li ha l-kunsill lokali ta’ Birkirkara kontra dan l-izvilupp trid tigi mfahhra. Dan kien ezempju iehor ta’ kooperazzjoni tal- kunsilliera ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika ma’ kunsilliera ta’ partiti ohra sabiex jigu mharsa l-interessi tar-residenti. AD qed tapoggja ukoll it-twaqqif ta’ ghaqda tar-residenti sabiex topponi dan l-izvilupp.”
