      Press Release 1-7-2004
AD objects to new golf course application

Alternattiva Demokratika-The Green Party is objecting to the new
application (PA 2871/04) for a golf course in Verdala in which the site
boundary is  the same as the previous one except for one field
which has been excluded from the new application.

"The same objections to the previous application apply to the new
application. The new application will have the same negative impact on
agriculture and the environment", observed AD's spokesperson Mark Causon.

The Green Party's spokesperson for the environment Mark Causon has written
to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority to register AD's
objections to this application. In his letter to MEPA Mark Causon
reiterated AD's strong objection to a golf course development in this
      site.

"The site qualifies as an AEI and SSI and we encourage its scheduling
-especially of maquis areas. Several of the recorded species are protected
by various laws including LN 257 of 2003 as listed in Schedule IV and V
protected flora and fauna. The land take that this development would
involve is extremely large when compared to the countryside areas
remaining in Malta and it would mostly entail the creation of a monotonous
ecologically barren landscape with the potential risk of Seashore Paspalum
becoming an invasive plant in surrounding areas (which include
ecologically sensitive sites). Such a development would entail huge amount
of water, pesticides and fertilisers which make it an unsustainable
development considering our limited land and water resources".

AD toggezzjoni ghal applikazzjoni gdida ghall-izvilupp ta'golf course

Alternattiva Demokratika-The Green Party qed toggezzjoni ghal
applikazzjoni gdida  (PA 2871/04) ghal zvilupp ta' golf course fil-Verdala
fl-istess post fejn saret applikazzjoni ohra mill-istess zviluppatur
bl-unika differenza li din l-applikazzjoni ma tinkludiex ghalqa
      partikolari.

"L-istess oggezzjonijiet li kienu japplikaw ghall-ewwel applikazzjoni
japplikaw ghal din l-applikazzjoni li ghandha l-istess impatt negattiv fuq
      l-agrikultura u l-ambjent", sostna l-Kelliem tal-AD Mark Causon.

      Il-Kelliem ghall-ambjent tal-AD Mark Causon kiteb lill-MEPA biex
      jissotometti l-oggezzjonijiet tal-AD ghall-applikazzjoni l-gdida. F'din
      l-ittra l-AD tenniet l-pozizzjoni taghha kontra l-izvilupp ta'golf course
      fil-Verdala.

"Dan is-sit jikkwalifika bhala AEI u SSI. Ahna nheggu lill-MEPA biex
tipproteggi dan is-sit u biex dan is-sit jigi skedat. Bosta speci li huma
      protetti bil-ligi fosthom LN 257 of 2003 jinsabu f'dan il-post. Dan
      l-izvilupp se jeqred id-diversita fl-ekologija tal-post u jista jwassal
biex il-pjanta Seashore Paspalum tinvadi l-inhawi vicin il-post fejn
jista' jsir dan l-izvilupp. Dan l-izvilupp jehtieg ammont insostenibli
      ta'ilma, pesticidji u fertilizzant. Fid-dawl tac-cokon ta'pajjizna u
l-iskarsezza tar-rizorsi johrog car li dan m'hu xejn ghajr zvilupp
      insostenibli".
