"PN AND MLP SHOULD CLARIFY POSITION OVER FOOD SAFETY" DR. HARRY VASSALLO

Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson Dr. Harry Vassallo publicly asked the Nationalist Party and the Malta Labour Party to clarify their position over Food Safety especially due to the lack of commitment against GMOs by the government and due to the comments by deputy Louis Buhagiar in parliament.

The Chairperson of Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party said that the introduction of a Food Safety Act would in itself be a positive step, but he criticised the Government for not yet having a clear policy on GMOs, adding that is a clear sign of lack of commitment on the issue.

"It is becoming clearer than ever that the Nationalists are only interested in adopting food safety regulations in view of Malta's application to join the EU. This is one more reason why AD support's Malta's membership in the EU. However, the government seems to be ignoring the European trend in favour of precaution with regards to Genetically Modifed Organisms and has ommitted any direct reference to such foods in the Food Safety Bill. GMOs could potentially be dangerous to peoples' health and agriculture in general, and various countries and regions are introducing legislation to label such foods or even ban them." Dr. Vassallo said.

Regarding the comments of MLP's Louis Buhagiar who that said the food safety bill under examination can put prices up, and that GMOs are a positive development, Vassallo said

"It is incredible that Malta Labour Party spokespersons are coming up with such statements. Once again, Labour is showing that it has no respect for the quality of life of Maltese and Gozitans. The MLP is obsessed with monetary costs over human costs. Labour deputies had previously criticised the implementation of health and safety measures at work for being an extra burden."

Dr. Vassallo presented AD's position on Food Safety, saying that apart from a Food Safety Authority, a Parliamentary Secretary should be responsible for this issue in order to safeguard people's health. He added that all GMOs should be immediately labelled in order that the consumer may make an informed choice when buying food. This step should eventually lead to the establishment of Malta as a GMO-free zone, similarly to Tuscany in Italy, Tasmania in Australia and other regions. AD is also proposing that organic farming be given various incentives in order to ensure that Maltese agricultural produce is natural, healthy and eco-friendly.

Dr. Harry Vassallo concluded by saying that

"It is becoming ever more evident that Parliament needs a breath of fresh air in favour of a better quality of life. AD's presence in parliament will provide this."

"Il-PN U MLP GHANDHOM JICCARAW IL-POZIZZJONI TAGHHOM DWAR IL-FOOD SAFETY" DR. HARRY VASSALLO

Ic-Chairperson ta' Alternattiva Demokratika Dr. Harry Vassallo stieden lill-Partit Nazzjonalista u l-Partit Laburista biex jiccaraw il-pozizzjoni taghhom dwar il-food safety.

Dr. Vassallo qal li l-introduzzjoni ta' ligijiet dwar il-Food Safety hu pass pozittiv, izda qal ukoll li l-huwa car li l-Gvern Nazzjonalista ser jintroduci ligijiet dwar il-Food Safety minhabba s-shubija ta' Malta fl-Unjoni Ewropeja. Din hi raguni ohra ghalfejn AD taqbel li Malta tissieheb fl-UE.

Dr. Harry Vassallo kkritika lill-Gvern minhabba li m'ghandux pozizzjoni cara dwar l-Organizmu Modifikati Genetikament (GMOs). Zied li l-gvern donnu qed jinjora l-mod kif bosta pajjizi bhal dawk Ewropej qed jiehu mizuri ta' prekawzzjoni kontra l-GMOs sabiex jigu ssalvagwardjati is-sahha tan-nies u l-agrikoltura. Qed jiddahlu sistemi fejn l-ikel ikollu tikketta li juru jekk ghandhomx GMOs u sahansitra hemm postijiet fejn il-GMOs gew ibbanjati.

Ic-Chairperson ta' AD tkellem ukoll dwar l-intervent fil-parlament tad-deputat Laburista Louis Buhagiar li qal li r-regolamenti li qed jigu diskussi dwar Food Safety jistghu jgholli l-prezzijiet u fejn tkellem favorilment dwar il-GMOs. Dr. Vassallo qal li hi haga inkredibli li l-kelliema ta' l-MLP qed igibu dawn l-argumenti. Dan hu ezempju iehor ta' kif l-MLP iqis il-flus bhala iktar importanti min-nies u ta' kif il-MLP ma jirrispettax il-kwalita' tal-hajja tal-Maltin u l-Ghawdxin. Vassallo fakkar kif deputati Laburisti kienu kkritikaw l-implimentazzjoni ta' mizuri favur sigurta' u sahha fuq il-post tax-xoghol bhala piz zejjed.

Dr. Vassallo ipprezenta l-pozizzjoni ta' AD dwar il-food safety, fejn qal li apparti Awtorita' tal-Food Safety ghandu jkun hemm Segretarju Parlamentari risponsabli minn dan il-qasam. L-ikel bil-GMOs ghandu jkollu tikketta sabiex il-konsumatur ikun infurmat dwar dak li qed jixtri. Dan ghandu jwassal sabiex eventwalment Malta ssir zona hiela mill-GMOs, bhal m'huma zoni ohra bhat-Tuskanja fl-Italja u t-Tazmanja fl-Awstralja. AD qed tipproponi wkoll li l-agrikoltura organika tibghata incentivi sabiex il-prodott Agrikolu Malti jkun naturali, tajjeb ghas-sahha u tajjeb ghall-ambjent.

Dr. Harry Vassallo temm billi qal li l-vuci ta' AD fil parlament ser iggib nifs gdid u nifs nadif favur kwalita' ta' hajja ahjar.
