Hi Goldie. I used to work in a nursing home and have taken care of people
with C-Diff. Good handwashing prevents the spread, otherwise theres not
much else you can do. Hand sanitizer is not effective in killing C-Diff
bacteria, which many people are unaware of. Something that you should
consider is taking the time to wash your mothers hands frequently, this is
most overlooked in patient care in my opinion. Especially during flu
season! Caregivers will clean the face, back and bottoms but neglect to
wash peoples hands quite often. YUCK!

She does not seem to be getting any better. I realize that at 88 she will not be with me long, I just want to make her transition as painless as possible.

I have left notes for the Dr and calls about the probiotics. Great idea !

                thanks again.

My grandmother suffered with clostridium difficile and had it recur a couple of times. She also was only responsive to Vancomycin, and they tried her on a different one initially.

Later, it was recommended that she ingest yogurt and such and was prescribed S. boulardii to prevent it from coming back.

I also helped take care of her and was in her and was a little concerned about getting it, but as long as you're not on proton pump inhibitor acid reducers and are healthy, you should be ok. Add probiotics (for both of you) and your chances or staying healthy should improve.

Here's a summary of one study:
                        http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/546934
RESULTS: S. boulardii, L. rhamnosus GG, and probiotic mixtures significantly reduced the development of AAD. S. boulardii significantly reduced the development of CDD
