Parking Permits/Citations - Community Advisory
- There has been some confusion regarding parking citations and parking
permits within the City of Takoma Park.
First, there are two types of parking citations:
1. One is the handwritten citation, which clearly states how to either
contest a citation or pay it (there are a set of blocks to fill in).
2. The second type of citation is the one printed electronically. The
back of the citation provides the information as to how to pay the
citation and how to contest it. Merely request a court date in writing
to the same name and the address that is printed on the back of the
citation (the same as if you were going to make a payment) if you wish
to contest the citation.
Additionally, we will be posting instructions on the police web site
when the new site is completed.
The City code requires residents to purchase a residential permit for
each vehicle that they own and plan to park on a street in one of the
residential parking areas. The code and City administrative procedures
also denote where to place the permit on the vehicle. Two visitors
permits are issued with the resident permit. These permits are only to
be used on visiting vehicles as specified in the City’s administrative
procedures. Residents should not be using them on their personal
vehicles that they own or have registered as owned. Our interpretation
of the existing regulations would allow you to use a visitors permit for
a temporary rental vehicle of a "Zip car;" temporary permits are also
available from the police department. The administrative procedures are
clear on this and it is not fair to those residents who follow the rules
and purchase the resident permits for each of their cars. Misuse of
parking permits, residential or otherwise, may result in the revocation
of the permit by the police department.
City parking regulations are posted on the Takoma Park web site under
the City codes. I am attaching the administrative procedures regarding
