Evaluation of Mandingo Pouch - should I spring for it?
- I previously posted a request for suggestions of African Art evaluators to determine a tax deduction for a museum donation. One of you suggested that I might want to post the item here before going ahead with the evaluation, to determine if it's even worth the cost.So here goes:The item is the 19th century mandingo pouch shown in the photos. Provenance is established through my grandparents, who were German American missionaries with the United Brethren Church in Sierra Leone in the 1880s. A photo is attached. The item is similar to these pieces in the Brooklyn Museum. I am not aware of any other museum holdings.http://www.britishmuseum.org/research/search_the_collection_database/search_object_details.aspx?objectid=623548&partid=1&output=Places%2F!!%2FOR%2F!!%2F39180%2F!%2F39180-3-2%2F!%2FFound%2FAcquired+Sierra+Leone%2F!%2F%2F!!%2F%2F!!!%2F&orig=%2Fresearch%2Fsearch_the_collection_database%2Fadvanced_search.aspx¤tPage=1&numpages=200More photos of the British Museum item are here:http://www.sierraleoneheritage.org/CI/index.php/item/item_xml/index/424d3a41662e313835322e3933302e3339
