Tribal Art Auction at Thomaston Place Auctions, ME
I just came across a catalog for an auction in Thomaston, Maine, on May 26 and 27. It includes some items of tribal art.
Examples, starting on page 129 of the printed catalog:
Lot #977 - Makonde helmet mask
Lot #978 - Fon or Ewe/Yoruba Vodun Fetish
Lot #979 - Dan Mask
Lot #980 - Yoruba Chief figure
Lot #983 - Bronze miniatures - unattributed (probably Ashanti or Dogon)
Lot #984 - Ivory Sculpture - identified as New Guinea, likely a Kuba king figure
and so forth, with several sets of passport masks and akuaba dolls.
Actually, with more than 80 objects, there is too much to summarize here.
I would like to send you to the Web site at www.ThomastonAuctions.com but I tried it and the site appears to lack an online catalog but instead be a list of online advertising links.
If you are interested in more information including possibly receiving a printed catalog by FedEx, I would try to call the auction house at 207-354-8141 or fax 207-354-9523.
Many of the pieces in the printed catalog appear to be quite good old examples, although it is easy to phoney up photographs (and even pieces) to look antique and authentic.
