TRIBAL ART SESSIONS, GALLERY & WORKSHOP INFORMATION
In July of last year my partner and I, both tribal art collectors and enthusiasic travellers, opened a new art gallery in the beautiful spa town of Harrogate, North Yorkshire;
Tribal Arts of Harrogate, which specializes in authentic and decorative tribal and 'primitive' art objects, textiles, jewellery, tools, weapons and ethnographic curiosities; at the
Rb Gallery, which hosts exhibitions of contemporary art and modern paintings by new and well known artists alike.
The gallery is situated on a quiet cobble street, which is safe for children, and is only a stones throw away from other places of interest like the Royal Pump Room Museum and Valley Gardens.
We are the only contemporary gallery of its kind in the North of England and our aims are to share with people something that they possibly havent seen before outside a natural history/ ethnographical museum, in a friendly, comfortable and stylish venue. So far the gallery has become a meeting place for art & tribal enthusiasts, many a subject has been discussed and new idea born.
Unlike so many decorative objects which are purely for decoration, most of the artefacts from our tribal collection have been either functional, ritual or ceremonial, and every piece tells a fascinating story of its use, and the
cultures and people who created them.
Being an enthusiastic teacher, I love to share what knowledge I have. Children especially love it, and with my supervision are allowed to touch, smell and wear some of the objects. The reference library an be accessed to aid school projects and for general interest, by students and teachers alike.
Every effort is made to make this experience accessible to all, regardless of whether one makes a purchase or not. The gallery can accommodate a wheelchair, and has a central sitting area.
Groups are also welcome to visit the gallery, and for a small fee will receive a teaching session with time to draw and sketch the objects. We also have a plasma TV/DVD with many films and documentaries that are available to watch, for these activities appointments are necessary, and again a list is available separately.
Some of our objects will be available for loan to various professionals; for drawing, photography, film, etc, and just lately, a music video!
I also travel to schools giving talks and workshops on tribal related subjects, from mask-making to
exploring other cultures/ mythologies and creating anti racism awareness. I have over 12 years experience teaching and training children, teenagers and adults, with and without additional needs. A list of subjects and workshops can be provided separately upon request, along with a brief CV, I am confident that I can tailor-make a lesson plan to individual requirements.
Occasionally we have members only Film Screenings (of a tribal nature), and organize and host charity events, which can be linked in with school events, to raise funds for tribal and indigenous peoples of the world, the focus being on helping them defend their lives, land and deciding
their own futures. We will also be holding drumming & healing workshops and occasionally invite respected speakers for evenings of adult learning and entertainment.
I also allow the gallery to be used as a platform for older students to gain real work experience as part of a work placement programme. Upon completion the individual will be provided with a testimonial and will have me as a referee for future employment opportunities.
The response to this new venture has been great and everybody has been very supportive. To prove this we won an award
for Harrogates BEST NEW BUSINESS 2006, and came second runner-up for the category BEST ART GALLERY. Pretty good considering we only opened in July last year, and the gallery is constantly evolving!
We hope you are now curious and accept our invitation to find out more about us; we are full of enthusiasm and would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions you may have. Although I have taught in many schools and colleges over the years, received high praise and some media attention (in which the school is always mentioned), I am always open to suggestions.
Please ring me or visit our website for further information, which includes lots of images, information, a contact and event page and
printable information including a map with directions to the gallery.

(If you think someone else may appreciate this email...maybe they enjoy art or have children and think that their school would benefit from these sessions...please pass this information on!)
