Don't Let Industry Set Farm Animal Regulations
- Message from The Humane Society of the United States-
The Arizona Department of Agriculture is proposing to adopt toothless egg farming regulations that codify some of the worst factory farm abuses. The draft regulations -- penned by the largest egg factory farmers in the country -- purport to protect animal welfare, but actually endorse cramming hens into tiny wire cages so restrictive that each bird has less space than a sheet of letter-sized paper in which to live. Please act immediately to stop this shameless endorsement of factory farm cruelty by the Arizona Department of Agriculture.
Arizonans made history in 2006 with an overwhelming vote to phase out two forms of intensive confinement in factory farms. Last month, California became the first state to phase out battery cages for egg-laying hens. While the public is increasingly voicing its opposition to this most inhumane form of farm animal confinement, battery cages sadly remain the norm in the egg industry.
Please demand more humane treatment of these animals and let the Arizona Department of Agriculture know today that its regulations should follow in California's footsteps and not allow battery cage confinement of laying hens.
